While not all academically and intellectually learners are going to exhibit the same traits, it should go without saying there are a few areas that should be seen throughout the majority of gifted learners. These include:
- Many learn to read early, even before they start formal school such as kindergarten
- High scores on Intelligence Quotient testing. Some schools set the bar at a score of 120 or greater, a student with a score of 160 or greater is considered a Highly Academically Gifted Student
- Consistently scoring level 4 on End of Grade exams, usually in the 90th percentile or greater among the state results
- Extensive vocabulary
- They often exhibit a great ability to focus on one particular concept for a greater period of time than their same age peers
- A desire to learn the "why's" of a concept, rather than take for granted the information being presented
- They are able to learn concepts quickly
- Ability to draw connections between concepts, whether related intentionally or unintentionally
- Can have learning disabilities that may lead to an underrepresentation of dual giftedness
